Woman questioned about Athens man’s suspicious death was free on bond

A woman who was questioned in connection with an Athens man’s suspicious Oct. 2 death was free on bond from an arrest last month on drug and burglary charges, according to court documents.

The documents were filed in Clarke County Superior Court last week, the day after the death of 41-year-old Jovan Shanta Campbell, who witnesses told police died after he was struck in the head with a baseball bat by a woman with whom he was having a verbal altercation at his home on Park Ridge Court.

Despite statements by eyewitnesses, an autopsy found no indications Campbell died from a blow to the head by a bat, according to police. An officer who responded to a 911 call noted in a police report that when viewing Campbell’s body he “did not notice any major signs of injury or blood on him.”
