The Butte County Sheriff’s Office is now calling the suspicious death of a man found Thursday north of Oroville a homicide.

The man, identified Friday as John Prater, 35, of Oroville, was found dead about 9 a.m. on Crystal Pines Road in the Cherokee area, according to a news release.

Deputies responded to the scene after receiving a call reporting “suspicious circumstances” in the area, according to the release.

Deputies found Prater dead, and detectives subsequently launched an investigation.

The circumstances surrounding Prater’s death remain under investigation, according to the release.

The Sheriff’s Office did not release information indicating how Prater was killed.

Detectives probe suspicious death in Cherokee area



The Butte County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday it is investigating the “suspicious death” of a man north of Oroville.

The man’s name and age were not released.

The Sheriff’s Office received a call about 9 a.m. Thursday from a person reporting “suspicious circumstances” in the area of Crystal Pines Road in the Cherokee area, according to a news release.

Deputies arrived and found a dead man, according to the release. Detectives launched an investigation into the incident because of the “suspicious nature” of the man’s death.

It was not clear why the death has been deemed suspicious.

Homicide detectives investigating suspicious death in East Village … – The San Diego Union

The suspicious death of a man in his 70s found in his East Village studio Wednesday is being investigated by homicide detectives.

A maintenance worker found the man’s body on his bed at an apartment building on Market Street near 12th Street about 10:30 a.m. and called police.

The man had suffered a head injury, San Diego police Lt. Todd Griffin said. he Medical Examiner’s Office will determine if the death was criminal.

The man’s identity is known, but his name won’t be released until family members have been notified.
